ROME, INSIDE OUT

THIS PROJECT RAN ALONGSIDE MY SEMESTER OF STUDY IN ROME. IT WAS INSPIRED BY THE POCKETS OF DISTORTED REALITY CREATED BY THE REFELCTIONS IN FOUTAINS AROUND THE CITY OF ROME. THESE REFLECTIONS ACT AS IN-BETWEEN SPACES THAT ARE NEITHER INSIDE NOR OUT, AND SIMULTANEOUSLY A COLLAGE OF BOTH. THESE MOMENTS OF CONDENSED REALITY FOUND IN FOUNTAINS ARE FUNDAMENTAL TO THE FEW OPEN SPACES IN ROME, ACTING AS A MIRROR OF THEIR SURROUNDINGS AND CREATING A NEW WORLD THROUGH DISTORTION. THIS PROJECT INVESTIGATES METHODS OF MATERIALIZING THIS SURREALITY INTO AN EPHEMERAL FORM OF DRAWING AND EVENTUALLY INTO A PHYSICAL REALITY IN THE FORM OF VERTICAL PIAZZAS.

THE MOTIVE OF INTERVENTION WAS TO MEND THE GAP CREATED BY THE SLASH IN THE URBAN FABRIC THAT IS THE BUSY STREET CORSO VITTORIO EMANUELE II BY CREATING MOMENTS OF PAUSE ALONG THE PATH BETWEEN PIAZZA DI SAN PANTALEO AND PIAZZA DELLA CHIASA NOUVA. THESE INTERVENTIONS BIND THEIR HIDDEN AND VISIBLE SURROUNDINGS INTO A PROJECTION OF EPHEMERALITY WITH A VERY SIMILAR FUNCTION TO THE FOUNTAINS BY WHICH THEY ARE INSPIRED BUT BECOME INHABITABLE AT THE HUMAN SCALE. THEY ARE CREATED BY THEIR SITE AND CAN BE PLACED ANYWHERE, LIKE A REFLECTION.
